CHRIS PICKUP

Research, Imaging and Interpretation in the Heritage Sector

Chris Pickup's talk looked at research carried out on the relationship between non-national museums and their regional universities. There are motivations for heritage scientists and conservators to develop relationships for scientific research, to enhance object biographies, create narratives for public engagement and development future techniques. The research carried out was three fold; a case study, interview program and literature review.

The case study highlighted cultural tension. It is unclear who has authority on the project, research being carried out on the collection rather than with the museum. Conservators are often not involved due to the time management issues involved.

The interview programme made it clear that research is good for public engagement and can help bridge the divide between specialisms. however, time, budget and infrastructure hinder heritage science research.

The literature research found that there are already thoughts that this relationship is vital, it can increase visibility to governments and policy makers influencing progress and change.

The talk concluded that we need to develop more empathy between professions, setting realistic expectations and encouraging more sharing of knowledge, considering what language we use to communicate.
