ROMAN COIN HOARD
In the object lab at the Conservation and Museums Advisory Service we had a massive project - a collection 1266 Roman coins. These coins were found by a metal detectorist in Malmesbury and after treatment will be going on display at Athelstan Museum. They are of particular interest as they date from the 4th Century, where power and rulers were fluctuating and changing regularly. We have found a good number of double headed coins within the collection which are said to be even rarer - signifying a point in time when there was a dispute as to who was in power.
The coins are made of copper alloy and due to their varrying condition and stability, and the quantity requiring treatment, the project threw up a number of challenges. This made it an ideal candidate for the ICON Archaeology Groups Twitter Conference, all part of the continuing focus on making knowledge and collections digitally accessible during the COVID-19 pandemic.
